Last week I was in Dillons picking up a few things. The man at the cheese counter asked if I was looking for anything specific. I was just browsing. Then he asks me, “How do you know if you are saved?” I knew immediately that he was questioning if a Catholic knew anything about salvation. Then he quoted Ephesians 2:8-9 “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so no one may boast.” This is a classic quote used to remind Catholics that we are not saved by good works. So I asked the man, “What is the next verse?” He was not familiar with verse 10, “For we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance, that we should live in them.” Here we learn that once we have been saved we must put our faith into action. God has entrusted a good work to each one of His children. Pray for the gift of God’s mercy, and also pray for the strength to put his grace into action.
